Port of Yawatahama

Port of Yawatahama, located at the base of Satamisaki Peninsula, faces Oita Prefecture over Hoyo Strait. As a good natural port facing Uwa Sea, Port of Yawatahama has thrived as a fishing base and as a port collecting agricultural and fishery products from early days.
In April 2000, the port was ranked down to local port from important port, and designated as a specified important port for local promotion in May the same year.
In the year 1064, a ferry service, first between Shikoku and Kyushu, was started (Usuki Port), and extended to Beppu Port thereafter. Port of Yawatahama plays an important role as an entrance at the western end of Shikoku.
In 1978 through 1985, the port functions were reinforced as the ferry boat became bigger, and the city area in the backland was re-developed.
In the year 2001, a vision of promotion was prepared to make the port a site of exchange, economical activation and disaster prevention in the area, while the construction of related facilities is under way. (Port Administrator: Yawatahama City)
