Port of Susaki

Port of Suzaki, located almost at the center of Tosa Bay, has developed as a good natural port utilizing the geography of ria shoreline, and as a loading port for lime stone.
With Torigatayama Mine boasting of the production of lime stone as a leading Japanese mine in the backland, Port of Suzaki plays an important role of supporting the local industry by transporting the produced lime stone in and out of the country from the pier at the mouth of port. Minatomachi Area imports Pinus radiata as the raw material of packing products from New Zealand, and produces packing products as a leading site in Japan.
Port of Suzaki with a wide entrance and a deep and narrow shape is susceptive to damages by tsunami, and suffered huge damages frequently so far. To protect the lives and properties of the people and remove obstacles in the development of local economy, therefore, construction of an embankment was started in 1992 as a permanent countermeasure against tsunami, and is still now under way.(Port Administrator: Kochi Prefecture)
