Port of Niihama

Port of Niihama facing Hiuchinada in Seto Inland Sea in the east part of Ehime Prefecture has thrived as an industrial port for Sumitomo Industrial Family including Besshi Copper Mine from Edo Era. The port completed its system as a modern port when Harbor Board (only one in Japan so far) was established in 1953. In the event of being designated as a part of the new industrial city including New Niihama City in 1964, a waterfront industrial complex and public piers, then insufficient, were constructed, and the port now plays a critical role as the site of physical distribution for the import/export of nonferrous metals and chemical industry, including ferry transportation, (Port Administrator: Niihama Harbor Board)
