Port of Murotsu

Port of Murotsu is located at Muroto Peninsula in the south-eastern end of Kochi Prefecture. As this coast line is a hard place for ships to sail with rough wind and waves, the port continues to play an important role of Port of Refuge from early days. Port of Murotsu boasted of its fame as a leading whale catching port in the country down to Meiji Era, was designated as an Port of Refuge in 1952, and known as a leading base port for deep sea tuna fishing till recent years. Currently, to play the role as an Port of Refuge as soon as possible, construction of embankment is under way. (Port Administrator: Kochi Prefecture)
