Matsuyama Airport was constructed as an airbase for the former imperial navy in 1941, and taken over by the U.S. Navy temporarily after the war, but returned by the U.S. Navy in July 1952.
Facilities were constructed from 1957, and the services were started as the Type 2 airport in October 1960. Airport was extended 350 m to the sea side and 450 m to the land side, thereafter, and the service of the 2,000 m runway was started in April 1972. Extension of runway by 2,500 m was planned to deal with the air transportation demands then increasing remarkably. From October 1985, 500 m extended to the sea side was reclaimed and embanked, and the service of the 2,500 m runway was started in December 1991.
